To return or not to return to Calgary.
The question that has plagued Calgary theatre'south dissipated son Ahad Mir for more than than a yr is whether to stay in Pakistan and ride the wave of an amazing film career or to return to Calgary and reinvigorate his stage career.
Before he left for Pakistan in the summer of 2016, Mir had established himself as one of Calgary's well-nigh promising emerging artists. He'd appeared in the drama Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, in productions of Shakespeare's The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, every bit well as the musical Naughty but Dainty!, for which he won a Calgary Critics' Award.
It was a siren call that drew Mir to Islamic republic of pakistan where his grandfather and male parent had made the family name synonymous with moving-picture show acting, but the motion came with its challenges.
"When I arrived in Karachi, I felt like I belonged there but I besides felt similar an alien because my language skills were so poor. I had difficulty reading the scripts that came to me. It took me ii months of intensive study to learn Urdu."
In the ensuing eighteen months, Mir filmed three television serial and a feature film. He received Pakistan's equivalent of the Emmy for Best Histrion in a TV series, for Yakeen Ka Safar.
"You spend anywhere from two to seven months filming a Television set series. They take betwixt 25 and 30 episodes each, and if you're filming on numerous locations it tin be quite gruelling," says Mir, who had promised The Shakespeare Company'due south artistic director Haysam Kadri he would return to Calgary if the right stage role came effectually.
"Haysam offered me roles in The Three Musketeers and King Lear and I tried to piece of work them into my schedule but failed. I can't ignore the kind of organized religion Haysam has in me, only my moving-picture show career was so demanding."
And then came the offer Mir simply couldn't turn down.
Kadri decided that The Shakespeare Company's 2018/2019 season would be an all Hamlet season with Hamlet: A Ghost Story, a co-production with Vertigo Theatre, every bit its centrepiece. He offered the role of Hamlet to Mir.
"Village is the kind of role yous take to juggle your career for. It'southward a office you lot can't castor aside. It is a huge draw for an actor.
"Fortunately, when I came to Pakistan, I went confronting the grain by not engaging a manager or agents, so the simply person I had to consult with was myself. I convinced myself I could accept a break from filming and that returning to Calgary did not mean I was abandoning my career in Pakistan."
It was not every bit easy a determination equally Mir might make it seem.
"I'm in a very comfortable identify in Islamic republic of pakistan right now. People want to piece of work with me and that is an incredible luxury, but the opportunity to play Hamlet is non going to keep coming effectually."
Mir says he wants his Hamlet to be relatable and attainable and that means he must take a sense of humour. Regardless of everything he endures, Hamlet must be charming.
"I think in that location has to exist a sense of amuse and romance in every character you lot play, whether he is a villain, a hero or merely an ordinary person, and that'south what I hope to exist able to bring to Village.
"The audition should want to hang out with my Village."
Mir plans to spend three months in Calgary next spring rehearsing, performing and just reconnecting with friends and fellow artists.
